Alaska Utility Cost Calculator
An Alaska home used about 587 kWh a month at 26.85¢ per kWh, so the average electric bill came to $157.61; the gas bill for heat is usually the bigger number.
Alaska figures
Cooperatives run the grid
Member-owned cooperatives made 81% of Alaska’s retail electricity sales in 2024 — the largest cooperative share of any state — and served about 299,000 of its customer accounts. Chugach Electric, Matanuska Electric and Golden Valley Electric are the three biggest retailers; Alaska Electric Light & Power is the only investor-owned company among the top five. In all, 19 cooperatives, 33 public entities and 14 investor-owned utilities sold power in the state.
Generation was 47% natural gas, 26% hydroelectric, 14% petroleum and 11% coal — the petroleum share is second only to Hawaii’s. Chugach’s Southcentral Power Project, a gas plant, produced the most. Because the statewide residential average of 26.85¢ per kWh blends very different systems, read your own co-op’s rate off your bill.
Dark months, high bills
Alaska homes draw comparatively little electricity — about 587 kWh a month — because most heat with natural gas (57%) or fuel oil (24%). Even so, the average electric bill climbed to $210.54 in January 2026 and sank to $126.76 in September 2025. Gas customers burned through about 1,488 therms in 2024, the most of any state by a wide margin.
Heating oil and assistance
Roughly 27% of homes use fuel oil or kerosene, averaging 672 gallons a year in the 2020 household survey — the most of the 17 states with a published figure. EIA’s weekly heating-fuel survey does not reach Alaska, so the oil and propane lines need your supplier’s price. The Heating Assistance Program is run by the Division of Public Assistance (listed by HHS under the Department of Health and Social Services).

Worked example
Modest electricity, a very large gas line — an Anchorage-style home on state averages:
- Electricity: 587 kWh × 26.85¢ = $157.61
- Natural gas: 124 therms × $1.312 = $162.69
$320.30 a month · $3,843.57 a year
