Utility Cost Calculator

The average U.S. home used 870 kWh a month at 17.99¢ per kWh — about $156.51 for electricity — over the 12 months to July 2026. Pick your state to estimate electricity, gas, oil or propane, and add the bills only you know.

How the estimate works

Electricity is your monthly kWh × your price per kWh. Until you type your own figures, the calculator uses your state’s average residential customer from the EIA-861M survey: total residential revenue divided by total kWh sold over the latest 12 months gives the average price, and kWh sold divided by customers gives typical use [1]. Because that price is revenue ÷ kWh, fixed monthly charges are already folded into it — which is why a home that uses little power will see a higher effective rate on its own bill.

Natural gas works the same way with EIA’s residential gas price and deliveries per customer, converted to therms with your state’s heat content [4][7]. Heating oil and propane are bought by the delivery, so you enter a year’s gallons; where EIA surveys prices, the last weekly price is filled in and dated [10]. Water, sewer, trash and internet have no reliable state averages, so those lines start empty. Full details: methodology.

Quick answers

What is the average cost of utilities for a house?

For energy alone, the national averages work out to $156.51 a month for electricity plus $76.12 for a home with gas service (617 therms a year at the 2025 average price). Water, sewer, trash and internet come on top and vary by provider, which is why the calculator asks for them. State pages show each state’s own figures.

Which state has the most expensive electricity?

Hawaii, at 43.51¢ per kWh on the 12-month average; North Dakota is the cheapest at 12.32¢. The highest typical bill is in Hawaii ($223.64) and the lowest in New Mexico ($99.27), because usage matters as much as price.

How do I estimate my electric bill?

Find the kWh used on a recent bill and divide the total charge by it to get your all-in rate, then type both into the calculator. Use a 12-month history if your utility shows one: a single summer or winter month is not a typical month. The electric bill guide also prices individual appliances and EV charging.

Why doesn’t my bill match the state average?

Averages blend every utility and rate plan in the state. Your provider’s fixed charge, tiers, time-of-use periods, taxes and your own usage decide your bill. Replace either figure with yours and the estimate becomes your bill’s arithmetic.

How current are these numbers?

Electricity runs through July 2026 (released September 24, 2026); gas prices are 2025 annual averages; heating-fuel prices are from the week of March 30, 2026. Everything was checked against EIA on October 5, 2026 and is refreshed monthly — see sources.
