Heating Oil and Propane Prices by State

In the last week of the 2025–26 heating season (March 30, 2026), residential heating oil ran from $3.972 a gallon in Nebraska to $5.913 in Delaware; propane from $1.642 in Nebraska to $4.706 in Florida.

How EIA collects these prices — and why they are dated

The State Heating Oil and Propane Program (SHOPP) surveys retail suppliers weekly from October through March only [10][9]. Outside the season EIA records a single price on the second Monday of each month and does not publish monthly averages, so the most recent weekly figure is from week of March 30, 2026 (last week of the 2025–26 heating season). The first prices of the 2026–27 season are scheduled for release on October 7, 2026; we update this page and the calculator when they appear.

Heating oil prices moved sharply late in the season: the U.S. average rose from about $4.10 a gallon on February 23 to about $5.54 on March 30, 2026 in the same survey. A March price is a reference point, not a quote — call your supplier, and type their price into the calculator.

Budgeting a year of deliveries

Oil and propane are bought in deliveries, so a monthly figure only makes sense as a yearly total ÷ 12. Example for Maine, where 54% of homes use fuel oil (RECS 2020): 567 gallons a year — the state’s 2020 average for homes using it [11] — × $5.371 = $3,045.36 a year, or $253.78 a month.

Your own delivery receipts beat any survey average: add up the gallons from the last 12 months. RECS gallon averages describe the 2020 survey year, and one winter is not another; EIA’s 2024 survey consumption results are due in spring 2027.

*Average gallons per household using the fuel, RECS 2020; “—” where EIA withheld the estimate or did not survey the price. Propane gallons include homes that use it only for cooking or a fireplace, so homes that heat with propane typically use more — the calculator’s “A home like mine” option has regional averages by main heating fuel.
