The most expensive electricity in the country

Hawaii’s residential price — 43.51¢ per kWh over the last 12 months — is the highest of the 51 jurisdictions, and July’s price leapt from 39.36¢ in 2025 to 48.00¢ in 2026, the steepest year-over-year rise anywhere. The generation table explains it: 77% of the islands’ 2024 electricity came from petroleum, a share no other state comes close to, and Hawaiian Electric’s Kahe plant was the largest generator. Solar (8%), wind (7%) and geothermal (3%) supply most of the rest.

Island utilities and rooftop solar

Hawaiian Electric and its Hawaii Electric Light and Maui Electric units sold 2.3 TWh to homes in 2024; the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative serves about 35,000 accounts on Kauai. The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission regulates them. Rooftop solar has gone further here than anywhere: about 22% of residential meters belong to homes with net-metered systems, the highest share in the country, and a rooftop-solar company, Sunrun, appears among the five largest retailers.

Small homes, steady bills

Homes use little electricity (about 514 kWh a month) and only 5% heat mainly with electricity. Air conditioning (2,837 kWh a year where present) and water heating drive use. Bills are high but comparatively flat: $262.17 in July 2026 against $181.61 in February 2026.

Few homes have gas service — 28,624 residential gas customers in 2024 — and at $5.712 per therm the 2025 price was the nation’s highest; an account uses only about 198 therms a year. LIHEAP is part of the Benefit, Employment and Support Services Division of the Department of Human Services.
