Choice through community power

Public Service Company of New Hampshire, the largest utility, sold 2.0 TWh to homes in 2024. Supply is competitive — 26 energy-only providers delivered 62% of retail sales, the sixth-largest share, to about 281,000 accounts — and community choice aggregation has arrived: the Community Power Coalition of New Hampshire sold 0.7 TWh to households, more than the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative (0.5 TWh, about 82,000 accounts). The Public Utilities Commission regulates the utilities.

Prices jumped this year

The July residential price rose from 22.79¢ in 2025 to 26.60¢ in 2026, the second-largest increase in the country; the 12-month average was 26.67¢. Homes use little electricity — about 641 kWh a month — and only 9% heat with it, so the electric bill’s winter peak ($213.46 in January 2026) reflects lighting and appliances as much as heat. Only about one in five residential meters is an advanced meter.

Seabrook nuclear station generated 57% of the state’s electricity in 2024, and New Hampshire produced about 1.5 times what it sold to its own customers.

Oil and propane heat most homes

Fuel oil heats 40% of homes and propane another 15%. Oil-heated homes averaged 591 gallons a year in the 2020 survey and propane users 450 gallons; at the end of the 2025–26 season SHOPP put them at $5.407 and $3.780 a gallon. Natural gas reaches 31% of homes, at $1.791 per therm in 2025. The HHS listing names the New Hampshire Department of Energy as LIHEAP administrator.
