Dominion, Duke and the state authority

Dominion Energy South Carolina sold 8.6 TWh to homes in 2024, Duke Energy Carolinas 7.0 TWh and Duke Energy Progress 2.0 TWh; the Public Service Commission of South Carolina regulates them. The South Carolina Public Service Authority, a public entity, sold 2.1 TWh to households, and 20 cooperatives such as Berkeley Electric made 24% of all retail sales across about 914,000 accounts.

Nuclear power and outages

Nuclear power generated 53% of South Carolina’s electricity in 2024 — Duke’s Oconee station was the largest producer — with gas at 23% and coal at 17%. The state generated about 100 TWh against 84 TWh of sales.

2024 was a year of severe outages: counting major events, the average customer was without power for about 3,155 minutes — more than two days, the most of any state. Excluding them, the figure was 116 minutes.

How the bill has moved

In EIA’s final 2024 figures the average South Carolina residential account used 1,050 kWh a month at 14.23¢ and paid $149.51. Over the latest twelve months the same customer paid about $165.31: the rate rose to 15.64¢ while use stayed close to 1,057 kWh. The monthly pattern is pure summer — July 2026 averaged 1,499 kWh a home, November 2025 just 827.

Electric heat and summer bills

Sixty-four percent of homes heat mainly with electricity, third-highest in the country, and 45% are all-electric. Bills peak with summer cooling ($232.00 in July 2026) and dip in the fall ($128.49 in November 2025). EIA lists the 2025 residential gas price as not available, so the gas line uses the 2024 average of $1.637 per therm; a gas account used about 412 therms. The Office of Economic Opportunity in the Department of Administration manages LIHEAP.
