Georgia figures
Georgia Power and 42 EMCs
Georgia Power, regulated by the Georgia Public Service Commission, delivered 29.1 TWh to homes in 2024. Much of the rest of the state belongs to electric membership corporations: 42 cooperatives made 31% of retail sales — the sixth-largest cooperative share in the country — and serve about 2.3 million accounts, led by Jackson EMC (3.5 TWh to households), Cobb EMC, Sawnee EMC and Walton EMC. Fifty-three public entities, from city utilities to authorities, cover the remainder.
Vogtle and the mix
Plant Vogtle, operated by Georgia Power, generated 33.9 TWh in 2024 — more than any other plant in Georgia and about a quarter of the state’s output. Nuclear reached 34% of generation and gas 41%, while coal slid from 36% in 2014 to 13%. Georgia consumed more than it produced: 150 TWh of retail sales against 140 TWh generated.
Two heating cultures
Homes divide almost evenly between gas heat (47%) and electric heat (46%), and the split shows in the bills. A Georgia gas account averages about 708 therms a year, and the 2025 price of $1.979 per therm was the sixth-highest in the country. The electric bill crests in summer ($240.38 in July 2026) and sinks in the fall ($123.18 in November 2025). In 2024 major events drove outage time up sharply: about 1,208 minutes per customer counting major events, 211 without them.
Propane, in 11% of homes, was $3.164 a gallon at the end of the 2025–26 season. Energy assistance is handled by the Office of Family Independence at the Georgia Department of Human Services.
