Florida Utility Cost Calculator
Florida’s average home ran through 1,099 kWh a month at 15.39¢ per kWh — about $169.14 — and for most Florida households that is the whole energy bill.
Florida figures
FPL’s state
Florida Power & Light sold 70.9 TWh to homes in 2024 — about three times Duke Energy Florida’s 22.0 TWh and seven times Tampa Electric’s 10.3 TWh. Eleven investor-owned utilities, overseen by the Florida Public Service Commission, made 75% of retail sales and served about 8.8 million accounts. JEA in Jacksonville and the Orlando Utilities Commission are the largest of 32 public systems, and 16 cooperatives cover about 1.4 million more.
Cooling, all year
Florida leads the country in electric heat — 66% of homes heat mainly with electricity and 77% burn no other fuel — but heating is a small load here. Air conditioning is the big one: about 4,379 kWh a year in a typical air-conditioned home in the 2020 survey, third-highest nationally. Monthly bills therefore track the heat: $221.97 on average in August 2025, $133.38 in March 2026.
Natural gas generated 77% of the state’s electricity in 2024, nuclear 11% (FPL’s Turkey Point produced the most of any station) and solar 7%. Coal, 23% of generation in 2014, was down to 3%. Close to 290,000 homes had net-metered rooftop systems, third-most in the country.
Major events and outages
EIA’s reliability table shows the weight of 2024’s major events: counting them, the average Florida customer was without power for about 1,488 minutes (almost 25 hours) over the year; excluding them, 67 minutes. Before comparing your all-in rate with the 15.39¢ average, read every line on your bill — fixed and per-kWh charges approved by the Commission are listed separately.
Gas is a niche here
Only 16% of Florida homes use natural gas, and the average account burns about 221 therms a year, so the per-therm price ($2.488 in 2025, second-highest in the country) is dominated by fixed charges. Propane, in 5% of homes, stood at $4.706 a gallon when EIA’s 2025–26 heating-season survey closed. LIHEAP is the responsibility of the Bureau of Economic Self-Sufficiency at the Florida Department of Commerce.
