Alabama figures
One big utility, then everyone else
Alabama Power is the state’s only investor-owned electric utility, and in 2024 it made 59% of all retail electricity sales across roughly 1.5 million accounts; its 18 TWh of household sales exceeded the next four retailers combined. The other 41% belongs to 36 public power entities such as the City of Huntsville, 24 member-owned cooperatives including Baldwin County EMC and Joe Wheeler EMC, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, which EIA shows selling no power to Alabama homes at all. Which of these serves your address decides your rate schedule.
Built for summer, heated by electricity
Almost two thirds of Alabama homes (64%) heat mainly with electricity, the second-highest share in the country, and 38% burn no other fuel. Cooling still wins the year: over the last 12 months the average residential bill topped out at $248.69 in July 2026 and fell to $143.71 in November 2025. In the 2020 federal household survey, air conditioning used about 3,078 kWh annually in an air-conditioned Alabama home, slightly more than the 2,868 kWh of electric space heating in homes that heat that way.
The power is mostly gas (45% of 2024 generation) and nuclear (31%); TVA’s Browns Ferry out-produced every other plant in the state. Coal dropped from 32% of generation in 2014 to 15%. Alabama generated 143 TWh in 2024 and sold 88 TWh inside its borders.
Meters, solar and help with a bill
Smart meters are nearly universal — 93% of residential meters were advanced (AMI) meters in 2024 — but rooftop solar has barely arrived: EIA counted only 76 net-metered homes. Propane, used in 14% of homes, cost $3.516 a gallon at the end of the 2025–26 heating season. Families who need help with heating or cooling costs apply through the Energy Division of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), which runs LIHEAP.
