Five investor-owned utilities

Indiana’s retail market is dominated by investor-owned utilities overseen by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission: Duke Energy Indiana (9.0 TWh to homes in 2024), AES Indiana (5.1 TWh), Indiana Michigan Power (4.2 TWh), Northern Indiana Public Service (3.4 TWh) and Southern Indiana Gas & Electric (1.4 TWh). Together they made 78% of retail sales; 72 municipal systems and 39 cooperatives, with about 610,000 accounts, cover the rest.

Coal halved in a decade

In 2014 coal made 85% of Indiana’s electricity, the fourth-highest share in the country; by 2024 the figure was 42%, with natural gas at 41% and wind at 11%. Duke’s Gibson station remained the largest generator. Indiana now uses slightly more electricity (99 TWh) than it generates (97 TWh).

Electric space heating is a heavy load where it is used — 4,378 kWh a year in the 2020 survey, third-largest among the states — though gas heats 65% of homes. Bills peak with summer cooling ($204.97 in July 2026) and are lowest in spring ($123.16 in April 2026).

What changed since 2024

EIA’s final 2024 survey put the average Indiana residential bill at $133.06 for 901 kWh a month at 14.77¢. The latest twelve months show 935 kWh at 16.94¢ — about $158.39. Use peaks in July (about 1,225 kWh per home in 2026) and bottoms in April (688 kWh), and 1.87 million homes also carry a gas bill.

Delivered fuels in rural Indiana

EIA tracks both heating oil and propane prices in Indiana; when the 2025–26 survey ended they stood at $4.680 and $2.634 a gallon. Propane homes went through 621 gallons a year in 2020. Smart meters lag the national pattern somewhat: 81% of residential meters were advanced meters in 2024. The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority runs energy assistance.
