DTE and Consumers

Two utilities dominate Michigan: DTE Electric sold 15.1 TWh to homes in 2024 and Consumers Energy 12.5 TWh — together 76% of residential sales — under the Michigan Public Service Commission. Energy-only providers delivered 9% of retail sales, but to only about 5,400 accounts; the largest, Constellation NewEnergy, sold no electricity to homes. The City of Lansing’s utility is the largest of 40 public entities, and 97% of residential meters are advanced meters.

Rising rates, gas heat

The residential price jumped from 20.55¢ in July 2025 to 23.05¢ in July 2026, among the ten largest increases in the country, and averaged 21.05¢ over the year. Michigan homes use comparatively little electricity — about 630 kWh a month — because 77% heat with natural gas; only 10% heat with electricity. Gas use is high, about 839 therms a year per account (fourth-highest), though the 2025 price of $1.030 per therm was among the lowest.

Generation and reliability

Natural gas made 45% of Michigan’s electricity in 2024, nuclear 21% and coal 21% — down from 49% in 2014. Indiana Michigan Power’s Donald C. Cook nuclear plant was the largest generator. Outages ran long: counting major events the average customer was without power for about 482 minutes in 2024, and 161 minutes without them.

Propane in the north

About 11% of homes use propane, averaging 838 gallons a year — fourth-highest among the states — and propane was $2.370 a gallon when EIA’s 2025–26 survey closed; heating oil was $4.499.
