Ohio figures
Most accounts buy from a supplier
Ohio has the largest energy-only share of any state: 75% of 2024 retail sales came from 89 competitive suppliers, which held about 3.4 million accounts — more than twice the investor-owned utilities’ 1.6 million — and four of the five largest retailers were suppliers rather than utilities. Energy Harbor sold 9.7 TWh to homes, more than any utility; AEP Energy and Dynegy each sold over 4 TWh. Utilities such as Ohio Power still own the wires and are regulated by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. Eighty-five public systems and 25 cooperatives set their own rates.
From coal to gas
Coal made 67% of Ohio’s electricity in 2014 and 21% in 2024 — the largest decline of any state — as natural gas rose to 60%; the gas-fired Guernsey Power Station was the largest generator. Ohio uses more than it generates (154 vs 143 TWh).
Prices are rising: the July residential price went from 17.38¢ in 2025 to 19.45¢ in 2026. Bills peak with summer cooling ($223.76 in July 2026) and dip in the fall. About 62% of residential meters were advanced meters in 2024.
Gas and delivered fuels
Gas heats 64% of homes, at about 751 therms a year per account and $1.304 per therm. Propane homes average 612 gallons a year and oil homes 512; SHOPP’s last prices of the 2025–26 season were $2.695 for propane and $4.726 for oil. Energy assistance comes from the Office of Community Assistance at the Ohio Department of Development.
