Louisiana figures
The heaviest electricity users in the country
The average Louisiana household drew about 1,200 kWh a month over the last year — more than any other state or the District. Two things drive it. Air conditioning runs long and hard: the 2020 federal household survey measured about 4,520 kWh of cooling a year in an air-conditioned Louisiana home, second only to Arizona. And 62% of homes heat mainly with electricity, with 43% using no other fuel, so the meter carries winter as well.
Low prices soften the blow. Louisiana’s 2024 all-sector price ranked 50th of 51, residential customers paid 12.99¢ per kWh over the past 12 months, and the July residential price actually fell, from 13.12¢ in 2025 to 12.72¢ in 2026. Bills still swing with the weather — $212.34 in July 2026, $113.35 in November 2025.
Entergy country
Investor-owned utilities made 85% of Louisiana’s retail electricity sales in 2024, fourth-highest in the country. Entergy Louisiana alone sold 14.1 TWh to households; Cleco Power (3.7 TWh), Southwestern Electric Power (2.7 TWh) and Entergy New Orleans (2.4 TWh) follow. The Louisiana Public Service Commission regulates investor-owned utilities in the state. Twelve cooperatives — Southwest Louisiana EMC is the largest — serve about 445,000 accounts, and 22 public systems about 175,000.
Gas-fired power, and outages
Natural gas generated 76% of Louisiana’s electricity in 2024 and nuclear 15%; Entergy’s Nine Mile Point gas plant was the largest producer. Coal’s share fell from 18% in 2014 to under 4%. Reliability is a weak spot: excluding major events, the average customer was without power for about 216 minutes in 2024, seventh-longest among the states, and about 631 minutes counting them.
Gas service and help
Nearly half of homes (47%) have natural gas, often only for a water heater or stove, which is why a gas account averages just 349 therms a year at $1.705 per therm. EIA does not survey propane or heating oil prices in Louisiana. Energy assistance is run by the Louisiana Housing Corporation’s Energy Assistance Department.
