Co-ops serve more homes than the utilities

Mississippi’s 25 cooperatives served about 810,000 accounts in 2024 — more than the two investor-owned utilities combined (about 653,000) — and made 37% of retail sales, the fourth-largest cooperative share in the country. Coast Electric Power Association and Southern Pine Electric lead them. The investor-owned utilities, Entergy Mississippi (5.5 TWh to homes) and Mississippi Power (2.1 TWh), answer to the Mississippi Public Service Commission. The Tennessee Valley Authority also ranks among the five largest retailers, though EIA records no residential sales by TVA here.

Big homes, gas-fired power

Homes use about 1,160 kWh a month, third-most in the country, and 56% heat mainly with electricity. In the 2020 survey, air conditioning took 3,693 kWh a year and electric space heating 3,018 kWh where those are used. The average bill reached $228.20 in July 2026 and fell to $131.62 in November 2025.

Natural gas generated 78% of the state’s electricity in 2024; Grand Gulf nuclear station was the largest single generator. Mississippi generated 77 TWh but sold only 49 TWh in-state.

Outages, propane and help

Mississippi customers sat through the second-longest outages in the country in 2024 excluding major events — about 279 minutes — and about 607 counting them. Rooftop solar is rare: only about 1,800 homes had net-metered systems. Propane reaches 19% of homes, fifth-highest share, at about 322 gallons a year and $3.052 a gallon when EIA’s 2025–26 survey ended. The Division of Community Services at the Mississippi Department of Human Services runs LIHEAP.
