An exporter of coal power

Wyoming generated 41 TWh of electricity in 2024 but sold only 17 TWh to its own customers — more than twice as much generation as consumption, the highest ratio of any state. Coal still produced 60% of it (87% in 2014), wind 22% and gas 13%; PacifiCorp’s Jim Bridger plant was the largest generator.

PacifiCorp, Cheyenne and the co-ops

PacifiCorp sold 1.1 TWh to homes in 2024 and Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power 0.3 TWh, both under the Wyoming Public Service Commission. Seventeen cooperatives made 29% of retail sales — ninth-largest share — with about 108,000 accounts; Lower Valley Energy sells the most to households, followed by Powder River Energy and High Plains Power. Smart meters cover only 39% of residential meters.

Prices are low — 14.01¢ per kWh over the past year, and the July price slipped from 14.64¢ to 14.36¢. The bill peaks in winter ($143.03 in January 2026), and the 2020 survey measured 4,329 kWh a year of electric space heating where used, fourth-largest among the states.

Use and prices since 2024

Wyoming households used about 635 kWh in September 2025 and 1,113 kWh in January 2026. EIA’s final 2024 average bill was $107.65 at 12.47¢ for 863 kWh a month; over the latest twelve months it was $114.46. About 175,000 homes buy natural gas.

The biggest propane users

Wyoming’s propane households used 929 gallons a year in the 2020 survey, the most of any state; EIA does not survey propane prices in Wyoming, so enter your supplier’s price. Gas heats 71% of homes, at about 734 therms a year per account and $1.114 per therm. The Wyoming Department of Family Services runs energy assistance.
