PacifiCorp and the cities

PacifiCorp sold 8.6 TWh to Utah homes in 2024, the overwhelming majority of residential electricity, under the Utah Public Service Commission. Forty-one public entities made 17% of retail sales across about 306,000 accounts; St. George, Provo and other cities run their own utilities, and Dixie Escalante is the largest of eight cooperatives.

Coal is fading, solar is rising

Coal generated 45% of Utah’s electricity in 2024, down from 76% in 2014; gas made 33% and solar 15%. PacifiCorp’s gas-fired Lake Side plant was the largest generator. Utah was one of six states where the July residential price fell this year — 13.12¢ against 13.45¢ — and the 12-month average of 13.32¢ is among the five lowest in the country.

Homes use about 778 kWh a month. Summer cooling more than doubles the bill — $169.51 in July 2026 against $78.77 in April 2026. About 81,000 homes, roughly 6% of residential meters, had net-metered solar at the end of 2024.

Spring lows, summer highs

Utah has one of the widest seasonal ranges in usage: about 593 kWh per home in April 2026 and 1,292 kWh in July 2026. The final 2024 average bill was $94.57 at 12.22¢ — second-lowest in the country after New Mexico — and the latest twelve months average $103.63. About 1.1 million homes buy natural gas.

Gas heats nearly everyone

Eighty-six percent of Utah homes heat with natural gas, the highest share in the country, and the 2025 price of $0.971 per therm was among the lowest; an account used about 703 therms in 2024. Propane was $2.337 a gallon at the end of SHOPP’s 2025–26 season. Home energy assistance is administered by the Division of Housing and Community Development.
