Evergy’s three territories

Evergy operates three of Kansas’s five largest retailers — Evergy Kansas Central (3.5 TWh to homes in 2024), Evergy Kansas South (3.2 TWh) and Evergy Metro (2.9 TWh) — all regulated by the Kansas Corporation Commission. Kansas also has 117 public power entities, among them the City of Kansas City’s utility, and 28 cooperatives with about 311,000 accounts; together public and co-op systems made 37% of retail sales.

Wind first, then coal and Wolf Creek

Wind generated 52% of the state’s electricity in 2024, coal 23% and the Wolf Creek nuclear station 16% — Wolf Creek was the largest single generator. As recently as 2014 coal made 58%. Kansas generates about 40% more electricity than it sells to its own customers.

Homes average about 875 kWh a month, and the summer peak is pronounced: the average bill reached $208.36 in July 2026, more than double the $99.01 of November 2025. The 2020 survey put air conditioning at 2,568 kWh a year in homes that have it.

A summer-heavy usage curve

Kansas usage more than doubles between the mild months and midsummer: about 656 kWh per home in November 2025 against 1,364 kWh in July 2026. The final 2024 average bill was $123.90 at 14.15¢ per kWh; the latest twelve-month figure is $132.04. Roughly 893,000 households have natural gas service.

Gas and propane

Gas heats 71% of homes; accounts averaged about 622 therms in 2024, and the 2025 price was $1.425 per therm. Kansas propane homes go through about 549 gallons a year, and EIA’s last 2025–26 reading was $1.977 a gallon.
