Union Electric and Evergy

Union Electric Company sold 13.0 TWh to Missouri homes in 2024, more than the next four retailers combined. Evergy Missouri West, Evergy Metro and Empire District Electric are the other investor-owned utilities under the Missouri Public Service Commission. City Utilities of Springfield leads 84 public entities, and 42 cooperatives with about 804,000 accounts made 20% of retail sales.

Still a coal state

Coal generated 58% of Missouri’s electricity in 2024 — one of five states where it still supplies the majority — down from 82% a decade earlier; the Labadie plant was the largest generator. Nuclear (16%), gas (14%) and wind (10%) make up most of the rest. Missouri sells more electricity than it generates (78 TWh vs 67 TWh).

The residential price is below the national average at 13.95¢, but usage is high (about 1,041 kWh a month) and the summer peak is steep: $226.03 in July 2026 against $103.87 in October 2025, more than double. The 2020 survey measured 3,589 kWh a year of electric space heating in the 31% of homes that heat mainly with electricity.

Usage through the year

A Missouri household used about 802 kWh in October 2025 and 1,405 kWh in July 2026, and the 2020 survey put air conditioning at 2,300 kWh a year where used — alongside 2,899 kWh for electric water heaters. Nearly 1.5 million homes buy natural gas. EIA’s final 2024 average was 1,001 kWh a month at 12.91¢, a $129.18 bill; the most recent twelve months come to $145.22 at 13.95¢.

Gas, propane and assistance

Gas heats 59% of homes, at about 597 therms a year per account and $1.460 per therm in 2025. Propane homes averaged 416 gallons a year and paid $2.209 a gallon when EIA’s 2025–26 survey ended. The Missouri Department of Social Services administers LIHEAP.
