PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric

Public Service Electric & Gas sold 13.4 TWh to New Jersey homes in 2024, Jersey Central Power & Light 9.2 TWh and Atlantic City Electric 3.6 TWh; nine public systems and a cooperative serve small territories. All answer to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. Eighty energy-only suppliers delivered 37% of retail sales to about 310,000 accounts.

A summer-peaking, importing state

New Jersey’s average bill swings more than most: $261.02 in July 2026, the fourth-highest monthly average of any state, against $108.75 in October 2025. The residential price averaged 23.78¢ over the year; July’s price was essentially flat at 25.19¢ versus 25.32¢ a year earlier.

Gas (49%) and nuclear (46%) produced nearly all in-state electricity in 2024 — PSEG’s Salem station was the largest generator — but New Jersey generated only 60 TWh against 74 TWh of sales. It is a rooftop-solar leader: about 200,000 homes were net-metered, fifth-most in the country.

Summer more than doubles use

New Jersey’s average household used about 482 kWh in October 2025 and 1,036 kWh in July 2026 — more than twice as much; the 2020 survey measured 1,748 kWh a year of cooling where it is installed. With gas service in 2.8 million homes, the electric bill carries little winter heat. The final 2024 figures show a $128.13 average bill at 19.34¢; the latest twelve months average $157.90.

Gas homes use a lot

Natural gas heats 75% of homes, and the average gas account used about 804 therms in 2024 — sixth-highest among the states — at $1.369 per therm. Oil heats 7%, at about 423 gallons a year, and cost $5.838 a gallon in EIA’s final 2025–26 reading. Home Energy Assistance sits in the Division of Community Resources of the Department of Community Affairs.
