New York figures
Con Ed, National Grid, LIPA — and NYPA
Consolidated Edison sold 11.9 TWh to homes in 2024, Niagara Mohawk 10.9 TWh and the Long Island Power Authority, a public entity, 9.1 TWh. The New York Power Authority is the third-largest retailer by total sales but sells almost nothing to homes directly. The New York State Department of Public Service oversees the investor-owned utilities. Seventy-eight energy-only suppliers delivered 44% of retail sales to about 907,000 accounts, and 48 public entities serve about 1.3 million.
One of the steepest price increases
The residential price rose from 26.22¢ in July 2025 to 29.90¢ in July 2026 — the fourth-largest increase among the states — and averaged 28.39¢ over the year, sixth-highest. New Yorkers use little electricity, about 587 kWh a month, and the bill peaks with summer cooling ($234.29 in July 2026).
Gas generated 48% of the state’s electricity in 2024, hydro 22% and nuclear 21%; NYPA’s Robert Moses Niagara plant was the largest generator. New York consumes more than it generates (141 vs 129 TWh). Rooftop solar is widespread, with about 227,000 net-metered homes, fourth-most nationally.
Heating: gas, oil and a big gas bill
Gas heats 61% of homes and oil 17%. A gas account burned about 896 therms in 2024 — third-highest after Alaska and Illinois — at $1.703 per therm. Oil homes averaged 505 gallons a year; EIA’s last weekly price of the 2025–26 season was $5.874. HEAP, the state’s LIHEAP program, is run by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.
