Choose a supplier, keep the utility

Pennsylvania’s utilities deliver the power and send the bill, but 62% of 2024 retail sales came from energy-only suppliers — the fourth-largest share of any state, from 101 suppliers holding about 1.6 million accounts. For homes, the big names are still the delivery utilities: FirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric (15.1 TWh), PECO (10.8 TWh) and PPL Electric Utilities (8.1 TWh), all regulated by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. Advanced meters are almost universal (98% of residential meters).

A power exporter

Pennsylvania generated 242 TWh in 2024 but sold only 142 TWh to its own customers — the largest surplus of any state. Gas made 59% of that generation and nuclear 31%, led by Peach Bottom; coal, 36% in 2014, was down to 5%. Even so, the residential price rose from 19.51¢ in July 2025 to 21.72¢ in July 2026, and averaged 20.70¢ over the year.

The bill peaks in winter — $229.03 in January 2026 — as 26% of homes heat with electricity; the 2020 survey measured 3,362 kWh a year of electric space heating where used.

A winter peak

Pennsylvania’s highest-usage month in the last year was January 2026, at about 1,135 kWh per home, against 650 kWh in October 2025. EIA’s final 2024 average was 817 kWh at 17.77¢ — a $145.17 bill — and the latest twelve months average $173.88. Nearly 2.9 million households also have a gas account.

Gas, oil and propane

Gas heats 52% of homes, at about 758 therms a year per account and $1.452 per therm. Oil (13% of homes, about 491 gallons a year) and propane (6%, 335 gallons) were $5.160 and $3.083 a gallon at the end of SHOPP’s 2025–26 season. The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services administers LIHEAP.
