Maryland figures
BGE, Pepco, Potomac Edison — and suppliers
Baltimore Gas & Electric sold 10.7 TWh to Maryland homes in 2024, Pepco 4.8 TWh and Potomac Edison 3.1 TWh; three cooperatives with about 232,000 accounts and five public systems serve the rest. The Maryland Public Service Commission regulates them. Electric supply is competitive — 72 energy-only providers delivered 46% of retail sales to about 383,000 accounts — and Constellation NewEnergy and WGL Energy Services were among the largest suppliers to households.
An importing state with rising prices
Maryland generated only 35 TWh in 2024 against 59 TWh of sales, so roughly 40% of its electricity comes from outside the state. What it does make is mostly nuclear (42%, nearly all from Calvert Cliffs) and gas (39%); coal fell from 47% of generation in 2014 to 7%, the fourth-largest decline in the country.
Residential prices climbed: the July price went from 18.83¢ in 2025 to 21.41¢ in 2026, the fifth-largest increase among the states. The bill also peaks in winter — $271.43 in January 2026, the highest monthly average bill of any state in the last 12 months — because 41% of homes heat with electricity; the 2020 survey found 3,249 kWh a year of electric space heating where it is used.
Gas, oil and help
Gas heats 49% of homes; EIA lists Maryland’s 2025 residential gas price as not available, so the calculator uses the 2024 average of $1.555 per therm. Seven percent of homes still burn heating oil — $5.276 a gallon at the end of EIA’s 2025–26 survey — at about 426 gallons a year. The Office of Home Energy Programs in the Maryland Department of Human Services handles energy assistance.
